چکیده

Effects of a wide range of concentrations of four salts (NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, CaCl2) on cell proliferation were investigated in suspension culture of a mangrove plant, Sonneratia alba. The results were compared to those obtained with suspension culture of another mangrove species, Bruguiera sexangula and non-mangrove tobacco BY-2 cells. Effects of salts on suspension cells were determined with both large scale (LS) method using a 100 ml culture flask, and/or a small scale (SS) method using a 24-well culture plate. Settled cell volume (SCV), packed cell volume (PCV), wet weight (WW) and dry weight (DW) were measured in LS method and PCV was in SS method. High concentrations of NaCl (25–100 mM) and MgCl2 (25 mM) showed strong stimulatory effects on growth in S. alba suspension culture, and low concentrations of KCl, MgCl2 and CaCl2 (10 mM) also showed similar stimulatory effects. In contrast, a remarkable stimulatory effect was not observed in B. sexangula and tobacco BY-2 cells. Cationic ions are effective for the growth of suspension cells in both mangrove species S. alba and B. sexangula. The SS method using multi-well culture plate and micro-tube measurement method developed in this report, can be applied for analysis of factors for stress tolerance.

Molecular phylogenetic relationships among four species of the mangrove tree genus Bruguiera (Rhizophoraceae), as revealed by chromosome and RAPD markers.

Analysis of karyotype, nuclear DNA content and RAPD markers were performed in four species of Bruguiera (Rhizophoraceae) of Bhitarkanika mangrove forests, Orissa, India. Detailed karyotype analysis revealing 2n=34 in B. cylindrica and 2n=36 in B. gymnorrhiza was reported for the first time and 2n=34 in B. parviflora and B. sexangula was confirmed. On the basis of the common types of chromosomes...

Salt balance in mangroves.

The tidal zone of tropical seas is frequently lined with great mangrove forests, the dominating species of which belong to such genera as Rhizophora, Bruguiera, Sonneratia, and Avicennia. The outstanding feature of these plants is their adaptation to growing in seawater, and even though all do well in river estuaries they seldom penetrate inland beyond the direct action of ocean tides. A questi...

Genomic Markers Reveal Introgressive Hybridization in the Indo-West Pacific Mangroves: A Case Study

Biodiversity of mangrove ecosystems is difficult to assess, at least partly due to lack of genetic verification of morphology-based documentation of species. Natural hybridization, on the one hand, plays an important role in evolution as a source of novel gene combinations and a mechanism of speciation. However, on the other hand, recurrent introgression allows gene flow between species and cou...

Four New Cyclohexylideneacetonitrile Derivatives from the Hypocotyl of Mangrove (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza).

Four new cyclohexylideneacetonitrile derivatives 1-4, named menisdaurins B-E, as well as three known cyclohexylideneacetonitrile derivatives--menisdaurin (5), coclauril (6), and menisdaurilide (7)--were isolated from the hypocotyl of a mangrove (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza). The structures of the isolates were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 1-7 showed anti-Hepa...

Colonization of non-planted mangrove species into restored mangrove stands in Gazi Bay, Kenya

Recruitment of non-planted mangrove species into Rhizophora mucronata, Sonneratia alba and Avicennia marina reforested stands (all of them 5 years old) was investigated to assess possibilities for natural colonization. Corresponding bare (denuded or open without mangroves) and natural (relatively undisturbed) sites were used as controls. Interstitial water salinity and temperature (measured at ...
